1st Shipment to Sikkim, India in early 2009
| 204 computer sets will help connect 15 schools and 5,000 students A volunteer with WCE spent six weeks in the state of Sikkim, India helping to plan the use of computers in local schools and arranged in June 2008 for a Sponsor to help pay the $12,000 in sourcing and shipping to provide 204 computer sets to help connect 15 schools and their 5,000 students. The schools are in the northeastern part of India. The shipment is planned to depart in early 2009. |
The shipment has been awaiting the receipt of documents to allow the importation of used computers into India.
The shipment will include printers, scanners and network hubs for each of the 15 schools.
This is WCE's 9th shipment to India. It is our 117th shipment.
The average annual income in India is $2,700 per person and about 5% of the people use the Internet.
This shipment will be packed by the volunteers of WCE Washington/Baltimore led by Tom Graham. WCE DC has shipped 21 shipments of 5,171 computer sets to connect 398 schools reporting 173,421 youth in the following twelve developing countries: Bolivia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Jamaica, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zambia.
