Agenda For the 55th Board Meeting:  Sunday 27th of June at 2 PM (Boston-time) 

               MISSION:   To reduce the digital divide for youth in developing countries; to use our global network of partnerships to enhance communities in these countries; and to promote the reuse of electronic equipment and its ultimate disposal in an environmentally responsible manner.

Strategic Ally One Hen, Inc. to jointly develop an entrepreneurship project for girls and women and to pilot in one developing country.  This proposed joint project will only go forward as funded.  (contingent on their approval)  Memorandum of Understanding

Strategic Ally:  TechSoup Global to jointly research and develop business plan for global used computer roll out.  This proposed joint project will only go forward as funded. (contingent on their approval)  Memorandum of Understanding

New WCE Water Technology Initiative:  New WCE initaitive working on potable water tecnology in developing countries.  New incubating role for WCE.  This proposed joint project will only go forward as funded.  There is an interested donor.  (contingent on their approval) Draft Initiative Summary and Budget

  • GHANA (1): Wuni Zaligu Development Association communities in the Northern Region of Ghana is seeking 250 mixed computers to help connect 10 schools with 11,179 students. They plan to connect half  of the computers to the internet in the first year and the other half in the second year. (Implementation Plan) Contact: Ziblim Abdul Karim, Programme Manager.   • NIGERIA (1): Badagry Local Government www.badagrygov.org, seeking 400 Pentium 2 and 3 computers to help connect 140,000 students in 22 primary and secondary schools in Badagry and 2 public libraries.   • UGANDA (1): Treasure LGBT  requests 200 mixed Pentium 3 and 4 computers including 50 laptops to help connect over 1,000 LGBT and non LGBT youth in Kampala.   • ZIMBABWE (1):  Hammond Trust requesting 25 Pentium 3 and 4 computers and a gas generator for 170 6th and 7th grade girls from the Chiremwaremwa Primary School (5 for the children at Hammond Ranch) and additional computers for schools in 8 nearby rural villages: Zaka Secondary School (Zaka), Manyiri Primary School (Manyiri), Nyangambe Primary and Secondary (Nyangambe), Mkwase schools (Mkwase).  The Trust has Sponsored a women’s embroidery project and wormen’s micro-lending project for 400 women since 1997.  They are applying for the Deane’s Girls Project in Zimbabwe.  The Bsat computer company is donating satellite dish to connect the school to the internet and has volunteered to help with installation.  They are interested in being a site for eCorps Zimbabwe that the Deane’s are helping to Sponsor three months after the arrival of the 2010 shared container.  Sponsor:  Hammond Ranch.  (Implementation Plan)  Contacts:  Kathy and Weldon Schenck.  [WCE Programme Officers for Zimbabwe:  Tinei Mutsago, Nicholas Sundire, Dumisani Nyoni,  Zeddy Chirombe,  Denboy Kudejira, and Bob Klepper.  WCE Regional Manager for Southern Africa:  Tariq Mohammed.  WCE Board Liaison for East & Southern Africa:  Henry M.   • ZIMBABWE (2): OliveGates ICT Centre of Excellence Ltd   (in Northern Ireland) working with its associate company: Incredible Computers in Zimbabwe that is working with the Ministry of Education & Ministry of ICT and possibly with Computers for Zimbabwe Schools to get computers into the schools. They are also interested in partnering with WCE in end of life computers in the region. (Implementation Plan) Contact:: Aaron Kanengoni.     Update on Sponsor Challenge Grant:   31 WCE Partners in 14 developing countries are competing for the five challenge grants of up-to $5,000 each.  One for Mexico has met the requirements so four now remain to meet the requirements by the end of August.

    FY'11 Fund Raising Plan:  

    1. Partners:  Continue to help recruit Partners with funds for WCE computers (without other services).
    2. Computer Sponsors:  Continue seeking same level of individual, company and foundation Sponsors for computers: $96,711 (FY'10 not including commitment of $25,000 for Dominican Republic):  :  Sponsor Report 
    3. Challenge Grant:  Complete Strategic Group matching challenge grant (computers only):  The Strategic Group $25,000 Matching Challenge Grant completes at end of August:  31 WCE Partners that have not previously received computers from WCE have expressed interest.  Recruit another Sponsor for another round.
    4. Single-Country Services Sponsors:  Submit proposals ($25,000 including eCorps, capacity building, teacher training) to foundations and global corporations:  60-country concept paper. We can provide you a Sponsor proposal for any of these 60 countries:  First one funded: Zimbabwe.  Second one funded:  Dominican Republic.
    5. Multi-Country Services Sponsors:  Submit joint venture proposals (like: ABINIA), Need help finding Sponsor for $188,000 for Indonesia.  Potential Mexico project.
    6. Friends and Family Campaign:  Continue 2nd annual  campaign: expand to ask all 700 WCE Members, 250 prior WCE Sponsors and donors (IDEA: give $30 to celebrate WCE shipping 30,000 computers  - coordinate timing with the Peoples Choice Award and end of year giving
    7. Combined Federal Campaign:  Expand on initial progress of 1st year.  Approach all employees of Federal government that WCE knows in September.
    8. Text Donation Campaign: Seek youth donations for a chance at 2 tickets for seats among the celebrities at the People's Choice Awards.  Campaign will take place in November to coincide with the announcements of the nominations - this will include separate campaign website with visible opportunities for corporate underwriters that match up with teen and young adult demographics of this popular event .  We are also seeking donations of flight and hotel.
    9. Annual Giving:  Expand request in December includes all 5,000 on WCE list via email and in November we mail to all 250 prior Sponsors and donors.
    10. Request for Proposals:  Submit WCE's 2nd proposal in response to an RFP.
