Bar Mitzvah Donation Goes Towards El Salvador
"During my Bar Mitzvah year I volunteered at World Computer Exchange, as one of the 13 mitzvoth or deeds that I performed throughout the year. Volunteering during my Bar Mitzvah year was important to me because becoming a Bar Mitzvah meant doing things for others, and not just celebrating on my Bar Mitzvah day.
"I chose to volunteer at the World Computer Exchange because I know a lot about computers and wanted to help fix them for people that need them. I had a hard time believing that there are kids my age in the world who have never seen a computer. So I started going to Hull each month to help fix computers. I learned how to install hard drives and CD players, reinstall power supplies, add and subtract RAM and check to see whether the computers worked after I fixed them. Some of the volunteers brought tools to help fix and take apart computers. So I asked for tools as one of my Bar Mitzvah gifts so that I could fix more computers each time I volunteer.
"Most kids have a party after their Bar Mitzvah, so I decided to have a roller skating party. Instead of receiving gifts for myself at my party, I asked my friends to donate to the World Computer Exchange. I raised almost a thousand dollars, and last month, I presented my gift of donations to Tim at WCE. Tim and I discussed how the money would be used. We decided that the money could help ship computers to a school in El Salvador. I hope that the donations will help the kids there benefit from technology so that they can have a better education. I look forward to volunteering at WCE for a long time to come." Rafi in Massachussetts.
Timothy Anderson said: "We had been looking for a long time for a donor to complete the funding for this shipment so that our Partner in Togo would be able to get this shipment. This young volunteer's generosity and hard work made this happen."
