Rotary Project in Bolivia

Girl uses WCE computer in Bolivia
Rotary Club Santa Cruz de la Sierra has a Minga Digital project that is requesting computers.
Santa Cruz Rotary Club is putting together funding for a 20-foot container of 200 computer sets to be used in rural schools around Santa Cruz.  We expect that this shipment will come from WCE Ottawa. The Rotary Club has requested that WCE volunteers raise $7,284 for this shipment

So far, the Santa Cruz Rotary Club has raised $8,100 toward this shipment for their match.  Our contact at this Rotary is William Torrico who used to be the Rotary District Governor for Bolivia.

We  hope to involve the Catholic Church as they manage most of the public schools for the government.  We also hope that this shipment will also place some computers with the local branch libraries of the national library system. The WCE president met many of the key players last year when in Bolivia.

Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar in Sucre will be importing computers for its 1,200 students and for 60 children and many young adults in projects that the university supports.  Julio Garrett Aillón, the Rector was referred by the Bolivian Embassy in Ottawa.

Peace Corps Volunteers are likely to be involved in helping in the areas where they are located again in this shipment - if they return to Bolivia by the time of this shipment.

WCE has a Board member from Bolivia, David Lozano.  He used to work for a variety of development agencies and mining companies in Bolivia and is committed to making this project a success - and use it to leverage additional shipments. He is now the Executive Director of the Kopling Foundation in Santa Cruz that may also wish to receive some of these computers.

This will be WCE's 8th shipment to Bolivia. The average GDP per capita in Bolivia is $4,500 and about 10% use the Internet.

We hope that in the future, we will be able to go forward with a more comprehensive project in Bolivia.  This would include sending eCorps team and providing capacity building as needed - as well as taking additional steps related to proper disposal of electronic waste. You can see a copy of the plan for phase 1 of this larger project here:  Implementation Plan
