News

As the new 2010-2011 school year begins, a group of students at Marshfield High School in Massachusetts again are gathering surplus used computers from their Town Government and refurbishing them to the same specs as WCE Chapters using the same inventory and status form. In this their second year, they will also join other WCE chapters in loading education and health content onto the computers prior to their shipment. Students who take Spanish classes are entering into an online exchange with a high school in Piedras Negras, Mexico that recently received computers from WCE.  Special thanks to their teacher and WCE volunteer, Kathleen Bandera.

Pavan Krishnamurthy of Fidelity has accepted the role of being the 4th Coordinator of WCE Boston.  He will guide the Chapter's efforts in fund raising, public relations, volunteers, educational exchanges, and equipment.

Bryan Barton of Milton Academy, the 3rd WCE Boston Coordinator has just entered graduate school in Pennsylvania.  He regularly volunteered with WCE through Boston Cares and has been a volunteer with WCE eCorps Nigeria 2008 and WCE eCorps Kenya 2009.  We look forward to seeing him when he visits home during his academic year.  The prior WCE Boston Coordinators have been Bill Wilmot who moved to manage a Charter School in New Hampshire and Carey Radebough.

Lou Stein is the new WCE Boston Lead Tech.  He is a member of the WCE Technology Committee.  Lou has guided the refinement of the system and forms that WCE volunteers follow in refurbishing computers and in loading operating systems, office suites and other content.

Gene Vinson of INC Research is the WCE Tech Manager for all WCE Chapters.  He is the chair of the WCE Technology Committee.  He has regularly volunteered with WCE and has been a volunteer with WCE eCorps Tanzania 2009 and is leading eCorps Tanzania in August and September 2010.

Evan Davis-Drennan is the tech intern.  He has just graduated as a student at South Shore Charter Public School and is beginning school at the University of Vermont in Burlington.  We hope that WCE Boston's loss will be WCE Vermont's gain.

Volunteers thanked:  On January 16th, 2010, WCE Boston thanked volunteers who have been frequent helpers of WCE.  Tim Anderson and Pam Cooney thanked Sumona Dey for her two years of full time help in the role as WCE Recruitment and Placement Manager.  She was presented with a cake and a framed certificate  from the National Community Service Commision and a letter signed by President Obama.  Bryan Barton also received a Presidential citation for his work as WCE Boston Coordinator, longtime Boston Cares lead volunteer, eCorps Nigeria and eCorps Kenya tech volunteer.  Also receiving WCE certificates were Evan Davis-Drennan, Lou Stein (also of Boston Cares) and Isaiah Berson.  (Sumona kindly shared her cake!)

Volunteers needed:  to help us test, load operating systems & pack computers at 936 Nantasket in Hull 02045 on the 3rd Saturday of each month (year round) from 10 AM to 3:30 PM.  You do not have to come for the whole day.  We usually can help arrange for transportation.  We provide pizza, beverages and good humor!  When it is nice out, we work outdoors.  Please let  Pamela Cooney know if you are planning to join us.
