Team information

We are looking for volunteers with the following skills: technology, communication, use of technology in education, and environment to help our eWaste Initiative. eCorps volunteers must be over age 21 to participate.

Currently, eCorps Nepals has two team members: Jeff Snyder a high school technology teacher in Boston and Henry Boyle a professional Services Engineer at Gateway Computers in Somerset, England.

We hope that all participants will find ways to learn some Nepali words before February and select some small gifts to bring along with you. We will arrange for team members to participate in skype calls to review some educational web links to prior to the trip. Team members are also encouraged to bring replacment parts with them for Pentium 1s and 2s including mother boards, hard drives, and RAM, and power supplies. It is always good on a trip of this length to bring some of your favorite foods as well as small gifts for those who help you or work with you.

What to expect

The brief orientation in Kathmandu will include tourism and some conversations on issues about Nepal as well as some instruction on basic Nepali words.  After the couple of days of rest and orientation in Kathmandu, the volunteers will  travel with a COPPADES staff person to different villages to work for 9 days. While there, the small teams will stay together with their guide in guest houses.

Many prior eCorps volunteers have found their 2-week trip to be life-changing, a once in a life time experience. Here are some first-hand accounts to give you an idea of what eCorps is all about: Read about eCorps Nigeria the evaluation and comments of our eCorps Tanzania 2009 team or the evaluation and comments of our eCorps Kenya 2009 team. Our prior eCorps volunteers would love to share stories of their adventure with you!

About Nepal:  About 2% of the people in Nepal use the Internet and the average annual income is about $1,200 per person. This is a huge opportunity for this team to help with training and model how to use computers to improve learning using the Internet.

Our other eCorps trips in 2011 are: Dominican Republic in April 2011 and eCorps Zimbabwe in September 2011.
