Greatest Need: Mali
World Computer Exchange (WCE) is working with the Rotary Club Bamako Amitie in Mail to connect 70 schools and 7,000 students. Right now 68% of the funds have been raised through an unusual fundraising collaboration among volunteer Mark Sinclair, his family and friends, Rotary Club Bamako Amitie in Mali, Rotary International, and a limo named "Vegas".
To quote Mark - 'It was an amazing journey – winding through the tiniest of alleys in the Medina of Marrakech, off-roading through the soft Saharan sands and along the beaches of Mauritania, ferrying across the Niger river, and the brutal road to Timbuktu". You can read more about this amazing journey here at Raising Funds for Mali.
Mark raised $4,000 during his long limo drive and then the Rotary auctioned the limo off for another $4,000. Then the District Rotary for Mali matched the funds and it now looks like Rotary International is going to match all of that.
We have gathered several interested schools and the Bamako Amitie Rotary have gathered many more. We hope to ship in early 2012 with content in French loaded by volunteers at WCE Ottawa.
