Marcus Garvey Foundation helps youth in Jamaica

Access to education was a fundamental tenet for Jamaica's national hero, Marcus Garvey Jr. Now his son, Dr. Julius Garvey, the head of the foundation created in his father’s memory, is collaborating with WCE to give youth in Jamaica access to computers and health content on HIV/AIDS.

The Marcus Garvey Foundation is helping to sponsor the shipment of 400 computers for Jamaica. These computers will be distributed to 25 primary schools reaching 10,000 youth. Primary schools were selected for this project because  the government has an established program to get computers into the secondary schools.WCE is working with iEARN-Jamaica on this project. The genesis of this project started with Timothy Anderson meeting with iEARN's Country Coordinator Donna Powell at the iEARN Annual Conference in Barrie, Canada in July 2010.

In addition to a wide variety of pre-loaded educational content, Dr. Garvey is working with WCE to expand our public health content – specifically on HIV/AIDS.  Currently, WCE’s health content includes the book "Where There is No Doctor" which contains information on HIV.  However, Dr. Garvey’s idea is to have public health content that really addresses the various public health risks, issues and ways to prevent HIV/AIDS. For Dr. Garvey, making this available to the schools where it can reach some of the most vulnerable to this epidemic, youth, is an important way to make an long-term impact.

Derek Krow, one of our Development Officers, for Jamaica is leading fund raising efforts to secure $7,000 for the last one-third of the sourcing and shipping costs for a container of 200 computer sets for this project.  On our donation page, in the drop-down list by "Program Designation" select "D Krow - Jamaica Project".  Please help support computers for primary schools in Jamaica.
