Steering Committee

Role of a WCE steering committee

The charge of a WCE Steering Committee is to coordinate, guide, advise, help, and evaluate the WCE Coordinator and the initiatives set by the Steering Committee. The members of a Steering Committee usually meet at least four times per year.

Steering Committee members also need to help WCE find space for computer storage, testing, inventorying, and palletizing as well as a local warehouse for temporary storage of pallets.

The expectation is that each WCE Office will hold a public computer-donating event each year with some press coverage that will help build visibility to build a regular flow of computers, volunteers, sister-schools, press, and funds from the area.

The Steering Committee for each WCE Office shall be composed of between five and eleven members who are drawn from the city or country that is designated by the WCE Board of Directors. They are initially confirmed by a vote of the WCE Board of Directors and thereafter elected by the Steering Committee.

The members of a Steering Committee suggest names to the Board of Directors of an individual to be confirmed as the Chair of their Steering Committee. The Chair shall be a member of WCE and have a vote in the Annual Meeting. One member of the Steering Committee will also be a member of the WCE Board of Directors or of the WCE International Advisory Council.

At least one member of the Steering Committee shall attend meetings of the volunteers for the city or country and report back on their progress to the Steering Committee.

A member of a Steering Committee shall report annually to the Board of Directors on the WCE activities in the city or country and work with the director or coordinator of their WCE Office to draft and submit to the WCE president a report and suggested policies, workplan, and budget for the WCE in their city or country.

They shall annually draft and submit to the WCE president an evaluation of the coordinator or director of their WCE Office.

WCE Offices should refer any potential partners to the international headquarters and should only negotiate, bind, contract, lease, spend, or submit funding proposals with the pre-approval of the WCE president or by vote of the WCE Board of Directors.

Members of a Steering Committee may have such other powers as determined by the WCE Board of Directors which has control of the WCE name.
